A note from our founders, Kathryn & Jann

In mid-2025 we experienced an event that all expecting parents dread; after arriving at the hospital in the early stages of labor, we were told that our son, Ziggy, had no heartbeat.

He was born in the third percentile of weight; a sign of trouble that would have been picked up by a basic scan. However, as a “low-risk pregnancy”, we did not receive any third-trimester monitoring beyond a tape measure.

As we processed our grief, we kept wondering why - in the age of wearable health monitoring - there was no device to continuously monitor a fetus as they develop. The underlying science exists, but no product has been built or commercialized.

For our second son, Finn, a healthy boy, we were considered high risk, and experienced a huge difference in how closely the pregnancy was tracked and monitored; although at the expense of hours a week needing to be spent in the hospital. We hope to extend that standard of care to all pregnancies, before it’s too late, and do so in a way that’s convenient for parents and clinicians.

While life’s journey took Ziggy from us, our experience and careers have uniquely placed us to solve this problem: Kathryn builds AI-enabled wearable consumer medical devices, and Jann is a Stanford professor of machine learning. We are thrilled to be joined in our mission by Aris, our Chief Medical Officer and Research Director of the Oxford Maternal and Perinatal Health Institute, and Hector, an experienced consumer business operator and leader, both of whom have had their lives impacted by pregnancy complications.

Nothing is as devastating as losing a child; and to honor our son we are on a mission to help other parents go home with living children rather than empty hearts.
